The Ukrainians originated from a project initiated by the ’80s Indie band called “The Wedding Present”. They have recorded 2 legendary John Peel sessions that were later on released as the album named ‘Ukrainski Vistupi V Johna Peela’. This album is truly about having fun while maintaining the well known sound of The Ukrainians- zizzy guitars, mandolin, bass, drums and accordion. It is a protest of the Communist-filled political, social, and economic order of the immediate post-independence period in Ukraine which ceased with the Orange Revolution. For example, the song “UkrainAmerica” is conveying the message that The Ukrainians are against Moscow-directed “Russification” and even the present overwhelming American pop culture- any predominant control over Ukraine. Even the opening bars of the Ukrainian national anthem are featured!
