This CD draws its material from the deepest layers of Ukrainian musical tradition and filters it through the sensibility of Kochan’s musical collaborators: bandurist Julian Kytasty, jazz improviser and singer-songwriter Richard Moody, British Isles traditional player Martin College and Yugoslavian contrabassist Nenad Zdjelar. Soundscapes range from spare 2-part harmonies to lush instrumental arrangements. This explores the creative possibilities found at the junctions where traditional music meets modern, where global meets culturally distinct. From pre-Christian to ritual, medieval to modern, this is timeless music spanning centuries…evoking distant places. A very impressive release!
